YOU HAVE QUESTIONS, WE HAVE ANSWERS

OpenTrack answers your most commonly asked questions.
Will OpenTrack cover me for competitive events?

No, OpenTrack coverage does not apply to competitive events.

Our policies are designed exclusively for non-competitive track time—this includes HPDEs and other instructional or recreational formats.

Unfortunately, we cannot provide coverage for any competitive activity, including but not limited to:

- Time trials
- Autocross
- Warm-up or qualifying sessions
- Wheel-to-wheel racing
- Any event with timed or ranked results

However, we may still have a solution.

We’ve partnered with an alternative carrier that does offer protection for certain competitive driving exposures.

If you’d like to explore coverage for a specific event or format, give us a call at 612-601-1034. We’d be happy to review your options.

Will OpenTrack cover me for Drag Racing?

No—OpenTrack does not provide coverage for drag racing. Our policies are designed specifically for non-competitive, closed-circuit road course driving, such as HPDE (High Performance Driver Education) and open track days.

Drag racing, including any form of straight-line acceleration events (timed or untimed), falls outside the scope of our coverage.

Looking for coverage for a specific event?

We may be able to help through a partner carrier that insures competitive or specialty motorsport risks. Give us a call at 612-601-1034 to discuss your options.

Will OpenTrack cover me for drifting events?

No—OpenTrack does not provide coverage for drifting events. Our policies are built specifically for non-competitive driving on closed-circuit road courses, such as HPDE (High Performance Driver Education) and open track days.

Because drifting involves intentional loss of traction, it falls outside the scope of what our underwriters consider insurable risk under our proprietary program.

Need help with coverage for a unique driving event?

We partner with a specialty carrier that may be able to provide coverage for certain drifting or competitive events. If you’d like to explore that option, give us a call at 612-601-1034.

Can SUV's and crossovers be insured for track-day protection?

At OpenTrack, our programs are designed specifically for high-performance sports cars and purpose-built track vehicles. Unfortunately, SUVs and crossovers—even those with performance badges—do not meet the eligibility requirements for track-day protection.

There are a few key reasons for this:

Higher Center of Gravity: SUVs and crossovers have a significantly higher risk of rollover due to their design. This poses greater safety risks to both drivers and others on track.

Track-Day Limitations: Many tracks and event organizers do not allow SUVs or crossovers to participate in HPDE (High Performance Driving Events) for the same safety concerns. Our coverage aligns with these industry standards.

Vehicle Dynamics: While modern SUVs may have impressive straight-line performance, their handling characteristics, braking, and cornering abilities are not optimized for the rigors of track use.

Underwriting Restrictions: Our insurance partners and underwriting guidelines prohibit coverage for any vehicle that was not designed primarily for performance or competition use.

Can I add other drivers to my policy?

Yes, you’re welcome to include additional drivers on your policy.

  • Single Event Policy – Includes the named insured (vehicle owner) and eligibility for one additional driver

  • Annual Unlimited Policy – Includes the named insured plus eligibility for up to five additional drivers

  • Eligibility – All drivers must be at least 25 years old

  • Cost – There is no extra charge to add eligible drivers

Note: If the vehicle is rented, please refer to the section below regarding ownership requirements.

Are professional driving coaches and instructors covered while they’re operating my car on track?

Yes—professional instructors and driving coaches are automatically considered covered drivers under your policy, as long as they are operating the vehicle for the purpose of providing instruction to you or another named driver.

There’s no need to list them separately, and no additional cost applies under either a Single Event or Annual Unlimited policy, provided they are at least 25 years old.

Important: Coverage applies only during non-competitive, closed-circuit track use. If your coach is driving during any competitive activity (e.g., racing, time trials, qualifying), coverage would not apply.

Does OpenTrack offer liability coverage?

Yes—OpenTrack offers optional liability coverage in addition to our physical damage policies.

You can choose from the following limits:

     $1,000,000 per occurrence

     $2,000,000 per occurrence

This coverage protects against third-party bodily injury and property damage that occurs during non-competitive, closed-circuit track use.

Important Notes:

Liability coverage does not extend to bodily injury sustained by the driver or any passengers in the insured vehicle.

It is only available as an add-on to a physical damage policy—not on a standalone basis.

Does liability coverage follow the car or the driver?

Liability coverage with OpenTrack extends per driver, not per vehicle. This means:

     - Each driver must have their own coverage to be protected while driving.

     - An exception is made for spouses, who can be included together under a single policy.

Important Details:

     - Drivers must be at least 25 years old.

     - Liability coverage is only available when paired with physical damage coverage.

     - Coverage applies only for non-competitive, closed-circuit track events.

If you have multiple drivers or spouses who will be driving, please let us know so we can help set up the appropriate coverage.

Does OpenTrack insure Ferraris?

No, Ferraris are not eligible for coverage under our proprietary programs, including both single-event and annual policies.

Due to a significant increase in Ferrari-related claims and the exceptionally high costs of repairs, we experienced ongoing profitability challenges over several years. As a result, we made the difficult decision to exclude Ferraris from our standard coverage offerings.

NOTICE: We’ve partnered with an alternative carrier that does allow us to insure Ferraris—including for both non-competitive and competitive track use. If you’d like to explore options for your specific situation, feel free to give us a call at 612-601-1034. We’d be happy to help.

Does OpenTrack cover Canadian tracks and events?

OpenTrack policies are available for events taking place within the United States and Canada. We are currently unable to offer coverage for international tracks or events outside of those two countries.

Our Single-Event program offers coverage for track days at over 110 tracks across the United States. Check our Covered Tracks page to confirm if your preferred track is eligible for coverage.

For our Annual Unlimited members, coverage is automatically extended to all of our covered tracks throughout the U.S. and Canada, giving you the flexibility to drive protected at a wide range of locations throughout the year.

Please note: OpenTrack policies are U.S.-domiciled and require a valid physical U.S. address in order for coverage to be bound.

If you’re traveling abroad, we recommend exploring local motorsport insurance providers. When you’re back on North American circuits, OpenTrack will be here with specialized coverage built for drivers like you.

Can I insure my car for less than the full replacement cost?

No, OpenTrack requires your car to be insured for its full replacement cost—including any modifications or upgrades.

This approach helps maintain the stability of our rating structure, keeps pricing competitive for all drivers, and avoids complications in the event of a total loss. Insuring to full replacement value ensures you’re properly protected and can get back on track without unnecessary delays or surprises.

Can I insure a vehicle I do not own?

No, OpenTrack requires the policyholder to have an insurable interest in the vehicle being insured. Our policy rates are not applicable for situations where the policyholder does not own the vehicle.

NOTICE: For vehicle owners renting their cars to other drivers (Arrive-and-Drive programs), OpenTrack may be able to provide tailored coverage through our Annual Unlimited program. This requires additional underwriting and customized pricing. Please contact us at 612-601-1034 to discuss further.

What happens if I change my vehicle(s) in the middle of my annual policy term?

If you change vehicles during your annual policy term, you can update your policy to reflect the new car(s).

However, please note:

Premium is fully earned at the time of policy issuance. This means that if your new vehicle has a lower replacement value, your premium will not be reduced.

If the new vehicle has a higher replacement value, an additional prorate premium will be required.

If you remove a vehicle, there is no premium adjustment, regardless of its value compared to the others on the policy.

Vehicle changes can be made easily through your OpenTrack dashboard or by contacting our team. We recommend notifying us as early as possible to ensure continuous coverage for your new vehicle.

Are OpenTrack's underwriters financially sound?

Yes. OpenTrack’s insurance programs are backed by financially secure carriers to ensure reliability and long-term peace of mind.

Our Physical Damage and Liability policies are underwritten by Texas Insurance Company, a member of the North American Casualty Group, which holds an “A” (Excellent) rating from AM Best, a trusted global credit rating agency specializing in the insurance industry.

This rating reflects strong financial stability and the ability to meet policyholder obligations—even in the most demanding situations.

Why are taxes & fees applied with the premium?

Track-day protection requires specialized coverage, and OpenTrack’s programs are underwritten by an Excess and Surplus (E&S) lines insurance carrier. These carriers offer tailored solutions for unique or high-risk exposures that standard insurers may not cover—like high-performance driving on a closed circuit.

However, this flexibility comes with additional costs. E&S policies are subject to surplus lines taxes and regulatory fees, which are required by each state to ensure compliance and consumer protection. These fees are not charged by OpenTrack or the carrier, but are mandated and collected on behalf of the state. The amount varies depending on where you live and is calculated as a percentage of your premium.

E&S carriers, including those we work with, are still regulated and held to high standards by state authorities, even though they are considered “non-admitted.” If you have questions about how the taxes and fees are applied in your specific case, we’re happy to walk you through it.

Can I change my coverage mid-term?

Yes, you have the flexibility to access and modify your policy details through your account dashboard at any time during the policy term.

Please note:

If you increase coverage—such as by raising your coverage limit or adding vehicles on an annual policy—an additional premium will apply and must be paid at the time of the change.

Reducing coverage, including lowering limits or removing vehicles, will not result in a refund or a reduction in your monthly payment obligation.

Can I transfer my coverage to someone else?

No, OpenTrack policies are non-transferable. Coverage is issued specifically to the named insured and is based on that individual’s risk profile and insurable interest in the vehicle.

If someone else needs coverage for the same vehicle, they’ll need to secure their own policy through our quoting process. If you have questions about how to proceed, feel free to contact us.

Does OpenTrack offer coverage for storage/transit/paddock/theft?

Yes, we can offer Off-Track, Transport, and Paddock coverage—including theft protection—through a trusted partner carrier. This coverage is issued as a separate policy and is designed to protect your vehicle when it’s not actively on track.

To receive a quote, please email us at support@opentrack.com with your vehicle details and how you plan to store or transport it, and we’ll get the process started.

BILLING & PAYMENTS

Simple, straightforward billing.
What are my payment options?

For single-event policies, full payment is required at the time of purchase. We accept both credit/debit cards and ACH (eCheck).

For annual policies, you can choose between:

Pay-in-Full: Pay the full premium upfront using ACH (eCheck) or credit/debit card.

Monthly Installments (CC only): Spread payments over monthly installments (2-month payment due at purchase).

Let us know if you have any questions about setting up your preferred payment method.

How do I cancel my policy?

Once an OpenTrack policy is issued, it cannot be canceled because the premium is 100% earned at that point. This applies to both single-event and annual policies.

However, if you have a single-event policy and your event is canceled or you’re unable to attend, we can adjust your coverage to a future effective date—provided the change is made before your original coverage start date.

If your event was canceled the morning of, you can request to have your policy moved to a different date by emailing a letter from the event organizer confirming the event did not take place to support@opentrack.com.

If you have any questions or need assistance with adjustments, please contact our support team.

What happens if I stop paying my monthly premium?

Missed payments or our inability to collect scheduled payments will result in early termination of your policy. Additionally, any missed or failed payments will make you ineligible to secure future coverage with OpenTrack—whether for single-event or annual policies.

Please remember that even if your policy is canceled, you remain responsible for paying the remainder of your 12-month contract and may be sent to collections.

How do I file a claim?

At the same time, you can take your car to any body shop or repair facility of your choice to start a repair estimate. Do not let the body shop start repairs until authorized by our claims representatives

Please note, your policy includes up to $10,000 in towing costs, which will be reimbursed through the claim process.

During the claims process, our team may request photos of the damage, proof of your vehicle’s value—including any modifications or upgrades—and other supporting documentation to help process your claim smoothly.

If you'd like to discuss the process with someone on our team, contact Brett Larson at Brett.Larson@OpenTrack.com or (612) 601-1034.

Do I need to use a specific body shop for repairs?

No, you are free to choose any body shop or repair facility you prefer. OpenTrack does not require you to use a specific shop for repairs.

You can take your vehicle to the shop of your choice to obtain a repair estimate. Do not let the shop start repairs until authorized by our claims representatives.

Our claims team will work with you to ensure the process goes smoothly.

Can I still access coverage after a claim?

We understand that accidents happen, and unlike many other track insurance providers, OpenTrack continues to offer coverage even after a first claim.

However, please be aware that the following policy change will apply after your claim is submitted:

— A 10% surcharge will be added to your base premium at your next policy purchase.

This surcharge will remain in effect for five years.

Please note: If a second claim is submitted within that five-year period, you will no longer be eligible for coverage moving forward.

OTHER THINGS TO KNOW

Are there age requirements?

Yes, all drivers covered under OpenTrack policies must be at least 25 years old. This applies to both single-event and annual policies. Unfortunately, we cannot provide coverage for drivers under this age.

How is vehicle value determined?

Vehicle value for insurance purposes should reflect the full replacement cost of your car, including any modifications or upgrades. We recommend using professional appraisals, recent purchase invoices, or trusted market guides to determine an accurate value. This ensures you have adequate coverage and helps avoid complications in the event of a claim.

Will you insure a vehicle with a salvaged title?

No, OpenTrack does not insure vehicles with a salvaged title. However, if your car is road-registered and you can obtain a 'rebuilt' title, we can consider insuring it again once it meets that requirement.

If your vehicle was previously insured with OpenTrack and experienced a total loss, it will remain uninsurable until it qualifies for a rebuilt title. Please note that for track-only race-cars, we cannot provide coverage after a total loss under any circumstances.
